Staff Breaks

Staff Properties, Breaks

Purpose

Use Staff Breaks to determine or set the wrapping behavior of a staff's columns.

Usually one or more columns of a staff can move to the right side of the previous staff when space allows, e.g. if you reduced the column's width or increased the page size.
Also, columns from the previous staffs may join with the current staff and push columns further to the right, e.g. if you increased the column's width.

You may prevent the automated wrapping of columns by inserting manual staff breaks.

Steps

  1. In the Staff Properties dialog choose Staff Breaks.

You can view the current break properties of the selected staff.

  2. To fix the first column of a staff at its place,
check the Before First Column check box.

To allow the first columns of a staff to join with the previous staff when space allows,
uncheck the Before First Column check box.

  3. To prevent columns from the next staff to join with the current staff when space allows,
check the After Last Column check box.

To allow the last columns of a staff to join with the next staff,
uncheck the After Last Column check box.

Note: Enabling automated wrapping by unchecking the Manual Break check boxes is not allowed if the formats of adjacent staffs differ.

  4. Choose Apply

To split a staff in two sections,
move the cursor to the column you want to move to the next staff, then choose Staff Break.
