The previous floor contact example showed, how movements of a proximal limb carry the free distal limbs to new spatial positions, while their internal relations remain constant. This is the default mode in all common animation software.
From a movement orientated point of view, it makes sense to override this mode in certain situations.

In this example, the chest remains fixated in relation to the spatial vertical axis and after that, the head performs this – fixated – role. Having this flexibility to switch orientations between different systems of reference, denotes a critical feature for movement analysis, as dance movement – as any other human movement – very often uses several reference systems interchangeably.
